The Growth of Afro’Dances: Good or Bad?

Updated: Jul 12

Trending Steps vs. Creative Process & Choreography

Popularity vs. Technique

For the past 15 years, I've been closely observing the growth and commercialization of Afro’Dances, much like many of you. It's been a journey filled with pride and excitement, but also some disappointment.

My major observations

  • Lack of consistency in African dance training: Many dancers focus on popular steps and trends rather than mastering technique and understanding the rich cultural heritage behind the movements.

  • Popularity over technique: The allure of social media fame often overshadows the importance of deep, authentic learning. This leads to dancers booking jobs despite a lack of understanding of the essence of African movement.

The results

Talented dancers miss out on the cultural depth, while those in decision-making positions fail to fully engage with and learn from cultural experts. This creates a cycle where the true essence of Afro’Dance is sometimes lost.

Solutions

  • Dancers: Invest time in taking comprehensive classes that delve into the techniques and cultural backgrounds of Afro’Dances.

  • Executives: Open yourselves up to collaborating with talented professionals who are deeply rooted in the culture.

What do you think? How can we strike a balance between embracing trending steps and preserving the authentic creative process and choreography of Afro’Dances? Share your thoughts!
