Fusing Afro'Dances: Respect the Culture!

Respect The Culture!

In the world of dance, fusion styles have become increasingly popular, offering innovative ways to blend different techniques and cultural expressions. However, merging Afro'Dances requires more than just creativity; it demands a deep understanding and respect for each dance form involved.

Start with a strong foundation

To successfully fuse any dance styles, a solid foundation in at least one of the disciplines is essential. For instance, dancers with a strong background in ballet often find it easier to transition into contemporary dance because of their rigorous training and understanding of movement principles. The same logic applies to Afro dances.

Educate yourself continuously

As a Congolese dancer, my culture is deeply ingrained in me. Yet, when I explore and incorporate other African dance styles, I always ensure to educate myself about their origins, meanings, and techniques. Despite my African heritage, I approach dances from Ivorian or Angolan cultures as a visitor, respecting the uniqueness of each style.

Imagine the dance community's reaction if I claimed to teach ballet or tap without proper training, merely branding myself as a "ballet fusion teacher." The idea seems laughable, doesn't it? The same standards should apply to Afro dance fusions. Authenticity and respect are crucial to preserving the integrity of these rich dance traditions.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while fusion can be a beautiful and innovative expression, it requires dedication, respect, and proper training. By committing to these principles, we can ensure that Afro dance fusions honor the cultures they represent and contribute positively to the dance community.

Well said. Authenticity and respect are crucial when it comes to Afro Dance. It’s sad that some people want a short cut and don’t want the knowledge but just watch a YouTube or TikTok and think they can teach it. That’s not authentic. Knowledge is power sis. Thank you for this.
